Tyler Hoechlin as hot cop Clark Russell in The Sticks.
Derek Hale takes a job with the sheriff after Matt’s Kanima’s Night Out takes out half the department. All he needs is to be over 20 and pass a civil service test and fitness and agility tests, and say hello to Beacon Hills’ new deputy.
- Permission to lurk
- Backup
- He’s not expected to be in charge, but he still has power
- The sheriff cares, really cares: about the county, about his coworkers, about Derek
- and it’s not about what Derek can do for him, it’s not because he needs Derek to survive, he just cares for no reason Derek can understand
- and it hollows Derek out, humbles him, terrifies him
- because he has someone to worry about again, because the sheriff is human and humans are fragile and Stilinskis seem to think they’re bulletproof and why the hell does this family care about him? Why the fuck does he care about them?
- and he’s going to lose his mind protecting these two, except the sheriff doesn’t know Derek’s secret, and he protects his men and women, and the day a human tries to take a bullet for a werewolf is a day he finds out, because no one else is dying for Derek, no one, especially-
- especially not a Stilinski, especially not the pack that isn’t pack, the family that isn’t family, the people who have no reason, no tie, nothing forcing them to care about him-
- and they care anyway, and they care more, and Derek can’t breathe thinking about them getting hurt because they’re stupid enough to care about him
- so the sheriff finds out about him when he tries to take a bullet for him, and Derek is all instinct, he gets the sheriff out of the way and the shooter on the floor, claws deep in the guy’s throat and shoulder, growling, and the sheriff just stares, and his heartbeat is through the roof, and Derek’s human side comes back and the wolf sinks down and he’s closes his eyes- thats the end of that, then. his claws retract, teeth round out, and he rises slowly, says, “I’m not gonna hurt you, Sheriff.”
- and Sheriff Stilinski says, “Yeah, I’m starting to get that. This is what my son’s been hiding from me, isn’t it?”
- and Derek can’t believe he’s not running, screaming, reaching for his gun (but Kate never ran, she said I always knew you were special)
- but Kate never felt like family, like pack
- and the Stilinskis never felt like a slow-building flame, like a terrible secret, dread crawling low in his chest and growing into guilt that pinned him down and drowned him until Laura was gone and anger took over
- and the sheriff slaps cuffs around the terrified shooter and says, “Calm down, son, I’m not gonna put you down.”
- he puts a tentative palm on Derek’s shoulder, and Derek’s head rises to stare at it, at him, and the sheriff says,
- “You’re coming to dinner tonight, and you’re gonna catch me up on everything my kid’s been afraid to tell me.”
